Antoine Kombouaré defends Lionel Messi’s performance against Real Madrid

Following Tuesday night’s Champions League game between PSG and Real Madrid (1-0), Lionel Messi has received a significant level of criticism, including a 3 rating by L’Équipe. However, ahead of PSG’s trip to Nantes this weekend, the canaries’ boss Antoine Kombouaré gave his opinion on the Argentine.

“You’re talking to an unconditional admirer. For me, you can’t touch Messi. I’m giving you my opinion, eh! I will never criticise Messi. I love the player, you can’t touch him! All the criticisms around Messi are very harsh,” said the former PSG player (1990-95) and coach (2009-11).

However, despite his admiration, Kombouaré did accept that the Argentine is no longer capable of what he once was. “He was born in 1987, at 34-35 years old, he’s not the Messi of Barça anymore. He’s never been someone who runs in every direction,” he said. “His age is what it is but he is still very good. He’s no longer capable of scoring 50 goals a season but it’s Messi!”

Nantes host Ligue 1 leaders PSG on Saturday evening at 21:00 French time.
