Late pin gives Auggies dual win over Augustana
MINNEAPOLIS — It came down to the last bout, and Augsburg College heavyweight Donny Longendyke (JR, Vadnais Heights, Minn./White Bear Lake HS) delivered with a pin with 24 seconds left in the third period, lifting the Auggies to a 25-21 victory over Augustana University (S.D.) in a nonconference wrestling meet on Sunday afternoon at Si Melby Hall.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The final bout of the match, featuring defending NCAA Division III national champion and top-ranked heavyweight Longendyke and Augustana’s Michael Lowman, ranked No. 5 in Division II, came down to a dramatic final period. Leading 4-0 after two periods, Lowman scored three takedowns to tie the match at 6-6 with 42 seconds remaining. But Lowman was penalized for a full-nelson, giving Longendyke a 7-6 lead, and after an escape and takedown, Longendyke scored the pin with 24 seconds left, providing the match-winning points for the Auggies.
With the pin, Longendyke improved to 14-2 on the season and 98-25 in his collegiate career. He now has 11 pins on the season and 56 in his collegiate career.
Augsburg, the No. 3-ranked team in the National Wrestling Coaches Association Division III national rankings and defending NCAA Division III national champion, and Augustana, the No. 15-ranked team in the NCAA Division II national rankings, both won five bouts in the dual meet, but the Auggies claimed three pins, a major decision and a decision, compared to Augustana’s two pins and three decisions.
Back-to-back pins by Eric Hensel (JR, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville South HS) and Austin Boniface (JR, Wyoming, Minn./Forest Lake HS) gave the Auggies a 19-12 lead after seven bouts.
Hensel, the No. 3-ranked 165-pounder in Division III, took a 1-0 lead into the third period against Augustana’s Bruce Lemon Jr., then claimed a takedown with 1:45 left in the third period, turning it into a pin five seconds later. Hensel is now 12-1 on the season, with 10 of his wins coming by pin. He is now 50-27 with 26 pins in his collegiate career.
Boniface rallied from a 5-3, first-period deficit to Ben Goodwin at 174 pounds, scoring two escapes and two takedowns in the third period before scoring the pin at the 3:53 mark. Boniface is now 8-3 on the season with two pins.
Sam Bennyhoff (FY, Mound, Minn./Mound-Westonka HS), ranked No. 8 nationally at 133 for the Auggies, remained unbeaten in his initial college campaign, improving to 11-0 with a 16-5, major-decision win over David Potratz. Bennyhoff claimed five takedowns, a four-point near-fall, and 3:26 of riding time to score the win. He now has six bonus-point wins (three pins, one technical fall, two major decisions) on the season.
Logan Hortop (JR, Faribault, Minn.) also claimed a pin for the Auggies, improving to 4-4 on the season with a 2:18 match-ender over Ashton Bartlett at 197 pounds. It’s his second victory by pin this season.
James Goman (JR, Lakeville, Minn./Trinity-River Ridge HS) evened his record at 9-9, opening the match with a 6-2 win over Javier Vieyra at 125.
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
Augsburg now holds a 12-4 advantage in the all-time series against Augustana, dating to the 1999-2000 season.
Augsburg has now outscored its opponents by a 217-54 margin in its six dual-meet victories this season.
Against opponents from NCAA Divisions II and III, Augsburg is 297-43-1 in dual meets since the 1989-90 season. Augsburg has lost just 39 matches to non-Division I opponents since the 1995-96 season.
Augsburg is now 18-4 under second-year head coach Jim Moulsoff.

The Vikings claimed two pins in the dual, as Jacob Anderson scored a 1:52 pin over Augsburg’s Marcus Hamer (JR, Kimball, Minn.) at 149, and No. 7-ranked 184-pounder Aero Amo claimed a 6:38 pin over Sebastian Larson (SO, River Falls, Wis.).
Brandon Charbonneau scored a 7-3 win over Aaron Wilson (FY, Oak Grove, Minn./St. Francis HS) at 141, Shawn Hatlestad claimed a 3-1 win over Tone Fuenffinger (SO, Hibbing, Minn.) at 157, and Clayton Wahlstrom used an escape with six seconds left to secure a 5-4 win over Logan Hortop (JR, Faribault, Minn.) at 197.
