DUNWOODY, GA — A Dunwoody police officer continues to recover after he was dragged onto one of metro Atlanta’s busiest, most chaotic interstates last week. Officer Nathan Daly posted a Facebook video on the Dunwoody Police Facebook page, in which he says he will bounce back from his injuries, “10 times stronger.”
Daly and another officer had just pulled over a driver, now identified as Derric Simpson, 35, on Ashford-Dunwoody Road at I-285 last Thursday around 11:30 am for allegedly violating Georgia’s hands-free law. A dashcam on the officers’ car shows Daly standing on the driver’s side of the vehicle when the suspect then drives away. Daly reached into the vehicle, which then pulled onto I-285 west, starting a wild police chase.
Police said Simpson struck a van on the highway, which flung Daly to the ground. Simpson then allegedly was involved in a multi-vehicle crash and then, according to police, fled on foot. He was arrested a short time later. Simpson was charged with aggravated assault on a police officer, aggravated battery as well as drug and other charges.
