Green tea is one of the most popular beverages worldwide, known for its refreshing taste and numerous health benefits. Among the many varieties, First Grade Dragon Well Tea (Longjing) and Biluochun Green Tea stand out as two of China’s most prestigious and beloved teas. In this article, we will compare these two exceptional teas in terms of origin, appearance, flavor, and brewing methods.
First Grade Dragon Well Tea (Longjing) originates from Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, and has a history dating back over 1,200 years. It is often referred to as the “national tea of China” due to its royal connections and cultural significance. On the other hand, Biluochun Green Tea comes from Dongting Mountain in Jiangsu Province and is renowned for its delicate leaves and fruity aroma. Its name translates to “Green Snail Spring,” inspired by the tea’s spiral shape resembling snail shells.
First Grade Dragon Well Tea is characterized by its flat, smooth, and uniform leaves with a vibrant jade-green color. When brewed, it emits a fresh, chestnut-like aroma with subtle floral notes. In contrast, Biluochun features tightly rolled, spiral-shaped leaves covered in fine white hairs. Its aroma is intensely fruity and floral, often compared to apricot or peach blossoms.
The flavor of Dragon Well Tea is mellow, sweet, and slightly nutty, with a clean, lingering aftertaste. It is known for its smoothness and balance. Biluochun, however, offers a bolder taste with a pronounced fruity sweetness and a refreshing, slightly astringent finish. Both teas are low in bitterness when brewed correctly.
To brew First Grade Dragon Well Tea, use water heated to around 80°C (176°F) and steep for 2-3 minutes. The leaves can be reinfused multiple times. For Biluochun, slightly cooler water (75-80°C or 167-176°F) is recommended due to its delicate leaves, with a steeping time of 1-2 minutes. Overbrewing can result in excessive bitterness.
Both First Grade Dragon Well Tea and Biluochun Green Tea are exceptional representatives of Chinese green tea, each with unique qualities.
